During my thirty plus year career I've had the good fortune to work in a variety of technology-related fields. I started my career at the tender age of fifteen working as the after-hours computer operator for Parda Federal Credit Union which serviced all Warner-Lambert employees. While there I did everything from backups, system updates, ran all of the financial reports, and produced monthly statements. Yep, my parents had to drive me back and forth to the Parke-Davis complex in downtown Detroit until I got my driver’s license. These were the days of room-filling computers with refrigerator-sized hard drives that were 1/1000th the capacity of the card you put in your camera today.
This early opportunity reinforced a passion for computers and technology that was fostered in 8th grade when I entered an experimental computer programming curriculum and has lasted my entire life. I pursued a Computer Science degree at Eastern Michigan University (EMU); to help pay for school I enlisted in the US Army (70th Training Division, Army Reserves) after winning an Army merit scholarship which allowed me to serve and attend University simultaneously.
While at EMU I happened to meet the partners of the first start-up technology company I would become involved in. The company broke ground producing Computer-Aided Machining software (XL/NC) for the original IBM PC; this was before Microsoft had delivered its ubiquitous MS-DOS and a PC was considered powerful because it had two floppy drives. This experience stoked a desire for the fast pace of the start-up environment, where you're expected to do everything from write code to make sales calls the whole time chasing the cutting edge of technology. I spent years at related startups where I was involved in everything from researching the early foundations of broadband networking to developing and implementing large-scale real-time manufacturing systems for companies such as GM, Chrysler, Ford, Michelin, and Navistar.
Looking for broader experience I left the small startup environment to head to Tektronix the Portland, OR based Fortune 100 electronics manufacturer where I was a member of the computer workstation, network display, and graphics printing and imaging groups. Working for a publicly-traded Fortune 100 company gave me invaluable insight into the inner workings of the modern large corporation. During my tenure I was a regional and national resource for sales and customer service teams and won the Tektronix Technical Excellence Award given to a select few employees within the global organization.
While at Tektronix I was approached by NeTpower an early-stage start-up based in Sunnyvale, CA to join them as a founding member of the team. The flame for startups had not been extinguished; I gladly joined the to help in the development of high-performance RISC-based computer workstations and servers built to support the release of Microsoft Windows NT. I served in both national and regional capacities helping to build the sales team and sales pipeline during our growth from the original 14 employees.
During the time at NeTpower I was following the changes that were occurring in Internet-based digital media market and was drawn to the emerging technologies of streaming video and wireless devices. I began developing solutions around new technologies such as Real Media, Windows Media, and produced the first interactive internet application for the world’s first wireless-internet connected handheld PDA (Personal Digital Assistant), the Palm VII.
As an independent consultant I was approached by TeleVideo Studios to develop their digital media business. Serving as Vice President/Director of Digital Media I was charged with developing TeleVideo's internet broadcast, web services, and eLearning businesses.
After years of working with emerging technologies it became obvious that there was a market for an integrated media company that leverages lessons learned and brings that experience to companies of any size.
